British Prime Minister Thresa May held a speech on 22nd September 2017 in Florence which reminds of the British position on non-participation in the European project from nearly seven decades ago. The main message in May’s speech was clearly stated at its very beginning – Great Britain leaves the EU, but it doesn’t leave Europe. This message very much reminds of the phrase formulated by Churchill – Britain is with Europe, but not of it, reflecting London’s attitude to the European project after the end of the Second World War.
The analysis by Assoc. Prof. Mirela Veleva provides a comparative perspective on the two political narratives and their impact on European and British politics.
