At the end of 2015 in Paris the European Union demonstrated global leadership and ambition in the area of climate and environmental policies, as it played a crucial role for signing a binding international agreement on reducing the carbon emissions on a global scale. The European ambition surpassed that of all the global players – by 2050 the EU envisages to have reduced its greenhouse gases emissions by 80% in comparison to the 1990 levels.
