The State of the European Union address by the President of the European Commission in front of the European Parliament is a yearly event of significant political and institutional importance at the EU level. The 2017 SOTEU is perhaps the most important address of President Jean-Claude Juncker, as 2018 is the last full year of his term, and perhaps also of his long-term political career. The next presentation of the state of the Union in September 2018 will be a reporting one rather than a programming one, as in the spring of 2019 there are forthcoming elections to the European Parliament and a new Commission. Perhaps that is particularly why Juncker decided to present his own views on the future of the European project in his address in 2017.
Prof. Ingrid Shikova comments on the vision he outlined and on the possibilities and challenges for implementing this vision. See more here.
